Headphones Not Working in Windows 10? Here Are Some Solutions

Headphones Not Working in Windows

This post will explain Headphones Not Working in Windows. Setting up sound devices in Windows can be a pain. Drivers can collide, Windows can misinterpret one type of sound output as another, and you may need to dig into your sound settings to figure out what’s going on. When your headphones don’t work in Windows 10, it’s time to troubleshoot.

Of course, if everything goes well, you should be able to plug in a sound device and it should just work, but if that doesn’t happen, this guide is here to help.

Headphones Not Working in Windows 10? Here Are Some Solutions

In this article, you can know about Headphones Not Working in Windows here are the details below;

First, identify the issue.

Before proceeding with all of the software-based remedies described below, make sure the problem isn’t hardware-related. If that’s the case, the solutions listed below are unlikely to work.

Both the headphones themselves and the port you plug them into are two notable pieces of hardware that could have faults when your headphones dont work. To begin, try to plug the headphones into another device to see if they work there. If your headphones still don’t work, it’s a good indication that you need new ones.

If they work on another device, try inserting the headphones into a different audio port on the PC that isn’t working. If they suddenly start working, it indicates that the issue is with the original port. You can either continue to use your headphones from the new port or continue reading for our list of fixes.

Check that headphones are enabled and set as the default device.

The Sound window is another significant place to look if your headphones are not working in Windows 10. The fastest mean to get here is to right-click the speaker icon in Windows’ notification area, then select  Open Sound Settings.

Click “Manage sound devices” in the sound setting windows and check to see if your “headset” or “headphones” are listed as “Disabled.” If they are, select them and then click “Enable.”

Return to the Sound Settings menu to set your headphones as your default audio device, allowing them to connect automatically as soon as they’re plugged in.

Here, select your headphones from the list by clicking the “Choose your output device” drop-down menu.

You’ll be able to change your default sound device in the future by easily clicking the speaker icon available in the taskbar notification area and selecting your desired audio device from there.

Sound Drivers to be updated, reinstalled, or replaced.

If you hear a reassuring “Ding,” by plugging headphones in to windows 10 so means they’re being detected at the hardware level. If your headphones dont run in Windows 10 despite the ding, the bad news is that something is wrong at the software level in delivering sound from PC to headphones.

To resolve this, navigate to “Device Manager -> Sound, video, and game controllers,” and then pick your audio driver. (In our case, it’s called “Realtek High Definition Audio.”)

Begin by right-clicking the driver and selecting “Update driver,” followed by “Search automatically for updated driver software.”

If that doesn’t work, right-click the driver and select “Disable device” before re-enabling it. Finally, you can try rolling back the driver by right-clicking it and selecting “Properties,” then picking the “Driver” tab and “Roll Back Driver.”

As a workaround, several users have reported the following. Click “Browse my computer for driver software” on the “Update driver” window, then “Let me choose from a list” and choose “High Definition Audio Device.” You may receive a warning message indicating that the driver is incompatible. Ignore the message and proceed to install the driver.

If this does not work, you can also look for the latest driver on the website of the headphone manufacturer.

Change Your Headphones’ “Default Format”

Return to the Sound window and choose the Playback tab. Right-click your headphones (if plugged in, they may appear as “Speakers” or as a “2nd Audio output” or something similar), then select “Properties” and the Advanced tab.

Play around with the headphones’ “Default Format,” clicking “Test” each time you change it to see if you start hearing audio.

Select HD Audio Over AC97

both AC97 and HD Audio are two audio standards that are commonly connected to the front 3.5mm jack port on many desktop computers. Which header links your motherboard to your front sound ports will ultimately determine whether your PC uses one or the other.

Assuming everything is properly connected on the inside (e.g., using the more recent HD Audio header, which detects devices automatically), you should go into your audio driver tool and double-check your “Connector Settings.”

Realtek HD Audio Manager is our audio driver utility (found in the Control Panel). Open it, then click the Settings cog in the top-right corner and make sure “HD Audio Front Panel” is selected under “Connector Settings.”

While you’re here, you may also use headphones as a secondary audio source rather than replacing your speakers by checking the option shown in red below.

Check that Bluetooth is working properly.

Another cause of your headphones not working in Windows 10 could be Bluetooth. This obviously only applies to Bluetooth headphones. There are two main things to keep an eye out for.

First, make sure your headphones are Windows 10 compatible. If you have headphones with bluetooth 5.0 and your PC only supports Bluetooth 4.0, then your headphones will not work propely.

Go to the Start Button with right click  and select “Device Manager.” To get information about your current Bluetooth version, expand “Bluetooth.”

The second issue could be that Bluetooth is disabled in Windows 10. Enter “Bluetooth” in the Start search box. “Bluetooth and other device settings” should be selected. Toggle Bluetooth to the “On” position.

It’s also possible that the built-in Bluetooth adapter on your computer has failed. Connect other Bluetooth devices to see if the problem is limited to your headphones. If nothing else works, you might need to purchase a USB Bluetooth adapter or dongle.
