Microsoft has recently included a number of exciting new features to Windows 11 that users have been anticipating for years. Microsoft has finally added tabs to File Explorer in Windows 11, and most users will be delighted. This article was last updated on June-10 2022, at 10:30 p.m. PST (11:00 a.m. IST). The prior solution only worked with older Dev builds, not the most new ones.

1. In the current Windows 11 Dev version 25136, the option to enable tabs in the File Explorer, as well as a new navigation pane (SV2Navpane), is now available (released on June 9). As a result, make sure you’re updated up for the Windows 11 Insider program’s Dev channel and that your PC is running the most recent OS release.

2. The next step is to install ViveTool, which allows you to create tabs in File Explorer. Open this link to get the most recent ZIP file.

3. From the context menu, right-click on the downloaded ZIP file and select “Extract All.” Then, right-click on the extracted folder and choose “Copy as path” from the select-down option.

4. Then, with administrator privileges, launch Command Prompt. You can do so by typing “CMD” into the Windows search option and selecting “Run as administrator” from the right-hand pane. If you don’t launch Command Prompt with administrator capabilities Enable Tabs, you’ll get an error while trying to enable tabs in Windows 11 File Explorer.

5. Type cd and paste the path you copied above into the Command Prompt window. To paste the path, right-click on the CMD window. It will appear similar to the image below Enable Tabs. Note that your PC’s file path will be different. Using this command, you will navigate to the ViveTool folder within Command Prompt.

6. Finally, run the command listed below. On Windows 11, it will enable the new tabbed UI in File Explorer.

7. Finally, run the command below to enable the new “SV2Navpane” Navigation pane in the File Explorer. Restart your computer now.

8. And there you have it: tabs in File Explorer and the new Navigation pane, both of which are fully functional in Windows 11. It’s worth noting that you can’t re-arrange tabs in the File Explorer right now, and you can’t pull out tabs to create an separate window for a specific folder Enable Tabs (like you can with most of the top Windows browsers). The feature is currently unfinished, but we expect Microsoft to improve the tabbed UI before making it available to all users.
